About

My name is Scott E. Candey.  I live in Portland, OR with my awesome wife and two awesome cats. This site is a catch all for my various interests and creative output. I’ve been involved in numerous dark experimental music projects over the years, run a record label and mail order, co-edited a music magazine, done graphic design, and a podcast. Now I am writing fiction.

My primary musical project since 1993 has been Gruntsplatter. In addition to that, there were a couple additional short lived solo projects and 4 different collaborative projects.

I started Crionic Mind Records in 1995. The last release came out in 2002 but the mail order still exists. Also in 1995 I helped to establish a print zine called Worm Gear that covers all manner of extreme music. It has since gone to the web, but still exists. Then there were the  26 episodes of a podcast called Professor Gruntsplatter’s Spookatorium that I produced. I haven’t done one in some time, but the archive is still online.

In the real world, I’ve worked in the print industry since 1997 doing graphic design, pre-press and technical support and continue to do so. I’ve done a fair amount of freelance print and web design for underground artists and labels as well over the years.

Writing is something that has been with me for as long as I can remember. I wanted to be a writer when I grew up. I don’t know if my reaffirmation of that means I’ve grown up, but it’s where my primary interest is now. I’m studying, exploring authors and burrowing into the small press world to get my bearings. I am also writing as much as I can.

If you have heard my music or seen my design work, my subject matter won’t surprise you. My interest is in the macabre and strange, the tradition of “weird tales” and related fields. Weird fiction, supernatural fiction, however you categorize it, offers the freedom and aesthetic that I can best communicate through. I’m sure the abstract, and not so abstract, themes of my music will run all through it. It can’t be helped.
